How do you determine the sex of lizards?

The hemipene pockets in lizards are very thin, so it is not considered a safe procedure to probe the hemipenes like in snakes.  Some of the lizards have a larger “bulge” under the tail and laterally to the vent.  Usually, the males have wider and larger heads.  The size of the pores on the underside of the thigh isn’t a good way to tell.
