Finally, Allergy Relief Without Using Steroids!

Skin allergies have driven our pets crazy for many decades and we had very few treatments that were effective in giving them relief besides corticosteroids, which have a laundry list of undesirable side effects.  Finally, a new oral pill has been approved for chronic skin allergies in dogs.  It is called Apoquel.  It’s been out for approximately 4 years but has only been supplied to the general veterinarians the last 2 years.  So far just at our practice, it has changed how we treat allergies.  We haven’t had any side effects reported so far and it has been extremely effective for the majority of allergy patients.  They also just recently came out with a new injection called Cytopoint which is a monoclonal antibody that blocks the production of specific inflammatory chemicals that cause skin  allergy symptoms.  It is very safe and can last 30-60 days generally.  It may take 1-3 days to see results and side effects such as vomiting, diarrhea, and decreased appetite can be seen in the first week but usually resolve without treatment.
